Developing me as a brand
(branding myself)
Within this
project we are looking at developing ourselves in a professional way that will
be successful within the industry we want to proceed into. We were told to
promote ourselves and our band and therefore it is key to establish our
identity/style first therefore in this journal (pages that follow) I have been
researching who I identify with, what trend I follow and more as well as
producing documentation needed for interview such as CVs and cover letters. In
the following headings I have outlined briefly my original thoughts about
myself as a brand to help me build upon to develop in a clear identity for
future use.
My original
idea is to name my brand partly after myself with the name Chloe Rose (my first
and middle name) as I want my collection to have a more personal quality to it
so by placing my name upon it I am giving the client something personal of mine
and therefore include them into my “fashion family” hopefully creating a
friendlier feeling to all my products. But after thinking about it the lack of
my surname could result in people not knowing who I am outside the brand so
therefore I want to really brand myself Chloe Rose by Chloe Rose Whiting so
people will be able to recognise me outside the brand and as more of an
individual designer and not just the brand.
Looking at
the work I like to produce I have built a basic style that myself as a brand
produces giving a rough outline of what I do and the features/ techniques I
like making up a picture you about myself. Here are some of the words that I
associate with myself as a brands style:
·
Feminine
–women’s wear – I am a designer that only really likes to work within women’s
wear as I feel that I being a girl myself can identify with them more as I can
understand them. I also am really feminine in my colour pallet using soft
pretty colours within my collections adding to this very feminine quality
identity of my brand.
·
Floral
– I am greatly inspired by the natural environment especially the flowers
within the British country side and therefore my style is very floral based so
I can say that my brand style is very floral and feminine in style.
·
Timeless
– my style is somewhat on the classic side (but not grandma like) due to the
way that floral’s are never out of fashion so therefore would not age with time
meaning that you will be able to wear it anytime throughout the years,
therefore teamed with a long lasting garment shape it can last a lifetime
(hopefully)
My brands target market
Target
market is a key thing to consider before even branding yourself at all as you
need to appeal to the right person otherwise you won’t be successful at all,
but every different group within the market is different so needs to be
approached differently and with care. For example you would look at teenage and
clothes for young adults differently than women 60 years old plus, for the
young you would look more at social media for research and promotion where you
wouldn’t be able to do this for the older generation as they may not know how
to use this so it would be pointless to try and connect and research them that
way (for both research to build your collection upon and promotional
techniques) here is where I currently place myself within in the fashion
textile market:
·
Women’s
wear – as I stated before I am women’s wear for the reasons stated above.
·
Young
adult – I feel my collection fits into the market within young adults (20
-30ish) due to the girly style of my collection looking to immature for the
older market, but the way in which it has a floral classic quality to it
feeling too sophisticated for the teenage market. Therefore making it perfect
for my chosen market as it showcases the woman’s growth into more refined
classic women showcased through the floral imagery and garment shape, but at
the same time feel young and girly due to the colour pallet.
Where do I see my collection?
I hadn’t
really thought about where I would place myself as a brand but due to the way
that my designs and style is floral and therefore doesn’t really age it could
be placed within a shop that is not tailored for fast fashion but instead is something someone buys for
quality more than quantity off and therefore allowing me to place more funds
into its creation so it would last longer for
the wearer and therefore you wouldn’t see my wear in most high streets
shops as they are fast fashion but instead find my items in more boutique shops
(due to the way that they are not all about masses of clothing but quality
pieces) therefore I would identify myself with the boutique lifestyle overall.
In summary
of my original brands identity the words that sum myself up are: women’s,
florals, timeless, young adult and the boutique lifestyle (and therefore I
could use these as hash tags and titles within my promotional methods and as
key words within my portfolio including my LinkedIn profile so people can
really build up a mental image of what my identity is and what I represent as a
designer and as a brand) as I research this more I may want to add or subtract
some of these words to really showcase myself as I develop myself more within
my chosen place within the industry, making this still a work in progress that
will all add up to make me as successful
as possible within my career path.
It looks as if you are right on target with your branding ideas. I can only speak for myself, but I really tend to choose a more personal label over just a random name. I also think your target age range is spot on. The examples of your textiles in the post are great, I especially like the green and ivory.
