Facebook
Type of social media
Facebook is one of the original networks for social media
therefore the vast majority of the world’s population have it. Facebook is a
platform where you are able to share with the people that you are friends with
and the public who know about you (if you do not have a private profile) what
you do so in my case I have both a private one for my own personal use between
my group of my friends and then a public one for me as a designer. Facebook
allows me to post both photos and text (but not masses but more than twitter)
making this a good platform as it allows people to build up recognition about
me as they will be able to visually see my style and read my comments so they
are able to get an idea of what personality I hold (professional, positive or
negative) making the element I stated before about a clean profile so important
to promote yourself in the right way.
Why I am using it?
The reason that I wanted to use facebook is that it has a
big following to it that has developed over time to become one of the most
popular social media platforms around, it is also one that caters for
everyone’s needs both personally and professional therefore you get a rounded
variety of different people using it from the more elderly to the really young
so by showcasing me as a designer on facebook I am appealing and showing my
work to a broad network of people. This allows me to build up a profile of followers
that can not only support me and that are in my target market but also allow
people that are experience in this area of expertise help me develop as a
designer by leaving their comments about what they like, dislike or think needs
something else opening up conversation with them that will really help me to
make desirable products for future use. The way that everyone wants to see what
others are doing is also one of the reasons I will use this network as the way
that facebook is one of the most easy apps to look at to obtain the relevant
gossip you are interested in makes it one that everyone looks at frequently
within their day, and therefore people will be able to see and look at my
profile whenever they like. The network is also like twitter in the way that
only takes seconds to look at and post upon but is instant reducing peoples
waiting times and fitting well into the way that we have little social time due
our other commitments, making it perfect as it’s not something you are
reluctant to look at.
Action plan/how I will use it
For this network I feel that it is important to build up
friends for support and networking/connecting with a range of different people
to help me develop as a designer and see what people comments, desires and
needs are so that I can move my brand forward in the most successful way
possible. Therefore I will promote my brand by boosting my page while
advertising it on different networks as well both my own such as my twitter
feed and also on others blogs (by commenting about others works and inviting
them to my facebook page so that they can leave their comments and see what I
am about/ my individuality as a designer) I am to go this regularly to build up
talk and connections within my chosen areas of the market. I also feel that I
need to keep my posts as current as possible and therefore I should aim to post
something new every day, being either something about me or my work, links to
my profile with an invite to visit/leave comments or a article that I find
particularly inspiring within a brand that fits into the same kind of identity
that I do (feminine, women’s wear, floral sect..) one of the main things that I
really want to do is keep on posting links to my blog as this is where the vast
majority of my work and written documents will be posted due to the type of
online presence it is being one where you are able to show off your brand, work
but also your personality with the platform being able to feature more
information about yourself then the other social medias where it is more a
quick thing. I will use facebook as a kind of stepping stone to promote myself
as a upcoming designer and to get people generally interested in the things I
do, mixing this use of social media with others such as twitter to help me
create a well rounded portfolio of followers to help me go in the right
direction within my future career.
Example of my work on facebook
On the visual presentation I have printed a few screen grabs
of the items that I have posted on my facebook page to give you an idea of what
will be placed upon this social network platform. One example is a post of my
research into trends so that people can see what I am influenced in so they are
able to build up an image of my brands identity where another post includes a
link to my blog so that the audience can get to know further about what I am
currently doing. I feel that in the future some of my new posts should include
elements that make the viewer question their style or mine and therefore leave
comments that I can build upon as a conversation starter opening up
communication between me as a designer and others that share the same
influences as me.
How can I improve my use or profile
on the platform?
To really improve my facebook portfolio at the moment I need
to change my photo to one that is more professional of me (and not one of me
celebrating) to make me look more serious and professional, at the moment my
photo shows me celebrating my achievements but is less professional but
showcases my happy personality. At the moment the photo is the only one I
currently have that features me on my own and due to the way that I am still
developing as a designer so currently do not have a true developed identity
this is ok, but in the future when I am a constant designer and what to really
promote my work t gain a network and sell my product this will be the first
thing I change to help me create a more professional positive identify for
myself. Another thing that I need to do to move my portfolio forward is to
invite more people to visit my page by putting into practise what I have
mentioned above about commenting on others blogs and inviting them to comment
on my social media page and generally boosting my pages views and who it is
shown too, but before I do this the first step to do this is to look through my
own friends, colleagues and people I study with and add them to this
professional page to gain their support and opinions so that I will be able to
develop within my small network of people that know me as an individual to help
me become more professional and specific in what area of the market I aim for,
therefore helping me become a consistent designer before I make contact with
the wider world so that the I am promoted within the public as a clear artist.
I will also improve my posts so that they are not just about my work as they
are now but to also include things that inspire me to be a more rounded
designer and not so self contained but to be aware of the industry as a whole.
Conclusion
In conclusion the use of facebook could really help me in
the development of me as a designer as it gives me the opportunity to gain
feedback about my work that will help me focus my design work. The way that at
first I can invite my friends before the wider public will also help me direct
myself into the right elements needed for my chosen industry before I promote
myself to the public. Overall as I develop so will my profile so this is really
only a starting point for me to build upon to create a professional use of
social media for the promotion of my work, therefore this profile will change
and my posts will also develop too.
