Here is my personal
SWOT analysis for this I have placed my point in the black but also a solution
(way of overcoming it or bettering myself in it) in the grey colouration to
create more of a plan for myself to aid me to become successful within my
future in the fashion textile workplace.
Strengths
·
I
have a HND in fashion and textiles allowing me to explore the areas in which
I connect to and the market place I want to go into.
·
Have
previously worked on a live brief with a professional digital print company
Tigerlily on designing prints for his spring summer collections allowing me
to build up some professional knowledge of the industry and some experience.
·
I was
taught to used Photoshop by the owner of the professional digital print
company so gained some inside knowledge of how they used the programme within
the industry itself and understand about the processes that goes on to sell a
print and move it on.
·
My
personal identity is very distinct in being very feminine, timeless/classic
style creating this unique sophisticated girly look.
·
I
have personal resources as I have transferable skills and am generally
confident in the work I produce as a end result of my projects I am also very
hardworking, determined and a
perfectionist in everything I do to gain the best result possible which others
will also say I process.
·
I
believe that everything that I do and draw has to have a reason behind it so
my pieces are overall quiet thoughtful and conceptual while also being very
feminine making my designs very individual
·
Have
had my portfolio looked over and adjusted by the head of advertising (Steven)
of john Lewis so was able to gain a sense of understand about what they (and
others within the industry) look for in people that they want to work with
and what kind of things they look for within interviews.

Weaknesses
·
I have a fear and am
generally bad at talking in public so even though I have confidence in my
work I am not very good at projecting it to the masses.
-so to overcome
this I really need to just practice talking in large groups to other people
to get over the fear I may have as I wouldn’t
see it as such a big thing anymore but instead an event I just need to
do to climb the competitive ladder.
·
I have to keep
pushing my imagery and drawing skills further to be able to develop myself
more professionally to gain a better standard to my work.
-to overcome this I need to keep on
drawing using a range of different medias and perspectives overtime this
should help me perfect and move forward my artwork resulting in my designs
becoming more professional/sophisticated.
·
I need to also
really build up my confidence up in some of the digital programmes that I am
not that familiar with such as adobe illustrator and other CAD processes and
also some of the social networks online
-practise makes perfect so I really
need to sit down and play around with the different programmes to really prefect
myself in them, I can also take classes in adobe illustrator, look at guides
and videos about how to use them to gain skills and knowledge in them that
would build up my confidence altogether.
·
I do have some
negative work habits in the way that I do have a problem at leaving things to
the last minutes and up to deadlines so consequently do gain some stress over
timings even though I would never miss a deadline and have not yet.
-I can create a rough outline/plan to
stick to so that I can time when I am going to do designs and coursework allowing me to fit everything I need to go
into my schedule resulting in me not being
rushed and stressed about deadlines as I will be more organised.
·
I have a very basic
skill and knowledge in pattern cutting and garment constructing so this means
I have lack of skills in the mores fashion side of the market that I really
need to build up to become successful within the fashion textile industry.
-like the
previous point about my imagery for this I also need to keep on practicing,
take specialised classes and ask tutors for help to move myself forward in
these areas and develop them to keep up with the fashion textile world.

Opportunities
·
Rise in social media means that it is easier to gain supports and a
following without having to sit face to face with someone meaning that people
are able to view you at their own conveniences at home.
·
Studying in London means that I am in the right location for the
industry I want to go into as London is the capital of fashion.
·
New technology means that I will be able to contact people within the
industry quicker and easier and network so in the future I could send my work
online to companies and contact Paul from tigerlily to intern under to gain a
greater amount of experience within the digital print market.
·
Can take advantage of the people around me both students and tutors to
help develop and grow myself to become the most successful I can be while
finding my place in the industry (find my niche)
·
The industry is constantly changing and moving forward with trends
such as fast fashion dominating the market due to the use of digital printing
this means that you are able to always be current
·
There is also a trend in environmental fashion due to the raise of
acknowledgement in the news about issues around the world so people are now
also wanting more timeless classic pieces that can be worn for any occasion
and throughout countless years (and there not worried about the price) which
is my preferred style making it the perfect niche in the market to be in as
this trend is turning into a super trend.
·
My style is very feminine which is an opportunity that i can play on
as women will always want to feel the most beautiful and girly at certain
events or in their everyday life meaning that my style will always be in demand
within women’s eyes throughout numerous years.
|
Threats
·
Obstacles I will face are timing issues as due to my location just
outside London I have to travel time to consider reducing the time I am able
to send on my design work at the universities work spaces
-again I need to
work of a plan to work to so that the time it takes in travelling is not
wasted or becomes a problem but instead is an opportunity for either social
or professional work.
·
Some of my weaknesses can turn into my threats as my basic knowledge
in areas such as pattern cutting and adobe illustrator could hold me back
within the fashion and textile market
-as discussed
earlier I need to practise where i am weak in by taking classes and playing
around with different ideas and sampling work within my coursework so I can
prefect my final works collection.
·
There are the developing of new soft ware and programmes meaning that
to make myself the most current and different within the industry i need to
not only specialise in one aspect of it (or one technique) I also have to
master others both physically and digitally meaning that I need to be forever
learning in this industry which could reduce my time in my development work
and halted if I need to produce something a certain way if I don’t have the
knowledge how to do it.
-I
need to keep present with these new programmes and learn them when they come
out straight away (and not leave it to the last minute) so that I am not left
behind in the industry and continue to build my skills within them so I can
manipulate them in my own way to make my work within these programmes
individual and unique.
·
Fear of public speaking and my general behaviour and approach being
quiet shy and un-confrontational means that I may feel unable to argue my
points across well and fight of competition
-practice
speaking in public and also learn how to speak to others in a way that allows
me to sound confident and professional.
·
Money is a key problem due to the expense of materials, travel,
university fees and living costs could overall lead to me not being able to
put additional budgets into my work to really move my work forward and become
unique
-overall
this is not really a threat as outweighing the pros of gaining better skills
and an education that will help me succeed within the future opposed to the
cons of it being expensive at the time is nothing. So what I need to go is
use my student loans to able me to afford to develop my style so that when I
am out of education I have an individuality that will allow me to gain a job,
a following and a future within the industry
and become a success. I can also look at different methods to obtain
cheap products and materials to be able to reduce the outgoing costs taking advantages
of different places to be able to develop myself fully.
·
Inability to face my weaknesses could be my downfall as it can halt my
progress as a designer and a person in both my professional life and personal
life.
-I need to look
at all my weaknesses in depth and work on each individually to reduce the
obstacles that my weaknesses may present within the future within the
industry, one of the ways I can do this is by looking at the points I have
previously made within this SWOT analysis so far and to keep creating new
points every year to keep moving myself forward/develop myself personally and
professionally.
